Injury Report for 9/27/09 Week 3 vs Tampa Bay

The injury report for week 3, 9/27/09 does not look good.

Justin Tuck has a partially torn labrum on his left shoulder and may not play this Sunday vs Tampa Bay. Kenny Phillips has a bad knee and there seems to be talk that he may be placed on the season ending injured reserved list. As per Adam Schefter the Giants and coach Tom Coughlin are being very vague about his injuries. (It is official Kenny Phillips placed on IR out for the season)

It was also reported that Tuck has had this same injury in the past throughout college and was able to play through it without missing a game.

The next three games for New York are at the Tampa Bay Bucs, at Kansas City Chiefs and a home game versus the Oakland Raiders. The schedule is favorable for resting Justin but the news on Phillips seems very serious and would be a big blow for Big Blue's defense.

Justin Tuck Defensive Player of the Week

NY Giants player Justin Tuck was named defensive player of the week after his performance versus the Washington Redskins.

He had a total of 5 tackles, 1 1/2 sacks and 3 hits on the Washington QB Jason Campbell. Out of his five tackles, four were solo and two of those tackles went for losses for the Redskins.

Osi Umenyiora also had a great game with impressive totals of his own which included a defensive touchdown on a play where he stripped the QB, recovered the fumble and ran for the TD.

Justin Tuck is a five year professional player who came into his own last year after anchoring a stout Giants defensive line. He was forced into a primary role after a season ending injury to Umenyiora and he handled the added responsibility very well. He was named to the 2008 Pro Bowl and recognized as one of the best players at his position. This year with his added experience and the return of Osi the Giants defense looks to be one of the best, not only in the NFC but all of football.

NY Giants Beat The Redskins

Week one of the 2009 NFL season starts on the positive side for the NY Giants who easily defeated the Washington Redskins.

The final score was 23-17 but it wasn't even that close. Big Blue dominated time of possession and the game. They still had some red zone issues, failing to get into the end zone with more consistency but there were some very positive moments that should make Giants fans very happy.

The running game was excellent even against a tough defense like Washington which includes big Albert Haynesworth. We did however lose Danny Ware who is an intricate part of our running game. He was set to be the third down running back and also the replacement for the recently departed Ward. He was hurt on the very first play of the game and it is still unclear for how long he will be lost for.

Steve Smith and the rest of the wide receiving core did a great job, this included a nifty touchdown by Mario Manningham. Hakeem Nicks dropped the first ball thrown to him but later made a very good catch in traffic. he also was hurt after twisting his ankle, preliminary reports are that he has a sprained ankle.

The defense lead by Osi Umenyiora and Justin Tuck was as expected. They put a ton of pressure on Campbell who looked flustered most of the time and very uncomfortable.

All in all the first week was a great success and good warm up for next weeks tough matchup versus the Dallas Cowboys.
