Brandon Jacobs Running Softly
NY Giants running back Brandon Jacobs scored his first touchdown of the 2009 season this past Sunday vs the Tampa Bay Bucs.
The touchdown was significant considering it wasn’t just the first TD for the bruising running back but it was the first “Red Zone” touchdown of the season for the G-Men. The struggles Big Blue have had in what Tom Coughlin calls the Green Zone have frustrated fans and players for the past year.
Jacobs stands at 6’4″ and 264 lbs of pure muscle and is well known throughout the NFL for his punishing running style. Defensive players respect and fear him especially when he is running full speed, some have paid the price when attempting to tackle him head on. So why is this powerful runner tap dancing and shuffling his feet in the backfield as if he were a dancer instead of a punishing running back?
Statistically he played his best game of 2009 this past week against the Tampa Bay Bucs, running for 92 yards on 26 carries for an average of 3.5 yards per carry plus his touchdown. The 2 previous games combined he had 32 carries for 104 yards for an average of 3.25 yards per run. The average for all 3 games is absolutely terrible, he could not muster a 100 yard game against a weak Buccaneers team this week and the problem is his soft running.
In the past Brandon Jacobs would take the ball and explode into a hole, punishing the first defensive player who attempted to tackle him and then continuing his hard running style. This 2009 season the big running back is tippy toeing in the back field and gliding along waiting for the defense to catch up to him. It is frustrating to watch him run the first 3 games, he is running as if he were a 5’9, 198 pound back which are Ahmad Bradshaw’s stats.
In all three games he has had a tendency to run right into the line or right before he hits the line he stops in order to try and change direction which is ridiculous for such a huge back. He doesn’t have the type of body that will allow him to stop and restart on a dime like smaller backs. He has been stuffed on several occasions this season on goal line or 3rd and shorts which needed about 1 yard, that should never happen! He is HUGE and he has one of the best offensive lines in football anchoring his runs. This past week a Bucs defensive player ran him down from the opposite side of the field as Brandon tap danced in the backfield waiting for the Red Sea to part.
He needs to take the ball, hit the hole or make one! Even the FOX commentators were talking about his lack of downhill running. At one point one of them said Brandon seems to forget he is 6’4″ and 264 pounds. Ahmad Bradshaw on the other hand is running as if he were possessed by the old Jacobs, hitting holes and running hard. Danny Ware should be back soon and as mentioned Bradshaw is doing a great job but we need our bruiser back!

Giants Red Zone Issues Continue
Whether you call it the Red Zone or the Green Zone like Tom Coughlin refers to it, the Giants have major issues when it comes to scoring from inside the 20.
Offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride has expanded the playbook this year when it comes to the passing game but he has yet to address the issues in the zone.
Last year we were ranked twentieth in the NFL when it came to scores within the twenty yard line. This is surprising considering the potent running attack the NY Giants had last year. New York was the number one rushing team overall and had an ability to power run with Brandon Jacobs. They provided a change of pace with Derrick Ward and Ahmad Bradshaw who were great in the open field but seem to bottle down when we hit “The Green Zone”.
The first two weeks of this 2009 season are a continuation of 2008 it seems. I watched both games and noticed how we moved the ball with ease especially in the Dallas game where our passing attack could not be stopped. As soon as Big Blue gets within the twenty yard line our offense stalls. The plays called by Gilbride have to be questioned sooner or later. We were one of the best regular season teams last year despite shooting ourselves in the foot (no pun intended to Plaxico, it was the leg) with our red zone deficiencies. Can we get away with these issues this year? We have till now but sooner or later our luck will run out and we will lose a game due to our lack of scoring the easy touchdown. It may even happen at the worst time during a playoff game.
Kevin Gilbride needs to be more creative when it comes to our green zone plays. We are too predictable, run on first down, run on second down and throw on third. The plays being called when we are not within scoring range are more creative and unpredictable, we need more of that when we are close to the end zone.
Brandon Jacobs also has some blame, he runs right into the pile instead of bouncing the run out and then looking for the hole to explode into. He also needs to be more assertive, he dances around as if he was a 185 pound back instead of his 270 pound frame. The G-Men could have had a very easy win this past Sunday vs The Cowboys if they would have scored within the twenty yard line. They made that game harder than it should have been, I cannot stress that enough.
Here is a stat for you, in 2008 the Giants had sixty nine plays within the red zone but only converted thirty five touchdowns. That is unacceptable!
