Who Is Better Hakeem Nicks or Victor Cruz?

Who is better Hakeem Nicks or Victor CruzWho do you think is the better wide receiver Hakeem Nicks or Victor Cruz?

The New York Giants have a good problem on their hands, two extremely talented and young WR's, both looking to get paid!

In 2009 Nicks signed a 5 year $12.54 million contract (a bargain), currently Cruz is on the last year of his contract for $540,000 (talk about a bargain). Both should get signed but if you had to pick one, who would it be?

In all honesty I considered #88 Hakeem Nicks the better WR  coming into this season but #80 Victor Cruz is making that point of view very difficult. In all fairness Nicks has been injured and missed 3 games which hurt his stats. Trust me I know cause I picked him in my fantasy football league instead of Cruz! Despite the disparity in games played the stats for this season are interesting.

Obviously Cruz' stats will be better due to playing 3 additional games but you still cannot deny Nicks' contributions in limited time played. With three games less he has as many 20+ yard receptions as Cruz and also matches #80 on 40+ yard catches.

Interestingly enough if we compare the numbers for 2011 there was a clear winner for you statistical junkies like me. Victor Cruz played 16 games in 2011, Hakeem Nicks played 15 games so there isn't a huge discrepancy in games played, here are the stats.

I was ready to make the argument that Hakeem was a better receiver based on stats from 2011 but as you can see there is a clear winner there. Cruz outperformed Nicks statistically in every selected category.

Stats aren't everything of course but they can be very telling. I hold both of these wide receivers in high regards and still find it difficult to pick one over the other. If we still had Mario Manningham I would definitely have him as the 3rd wide out on the New York Giants but an above average number 3.

The organization was quick to identify Victor's importance and potential which made letting Manningham go that much easier. The money saved on him will go towards making Victor Cruz a deservedly rich man.

Nothing is ever perfect and Cruz has experienced some issues holding on to passes, notably last season and also at the beginning of 2012. In all fairness every single one of those drops were always due to Victor Cruz trying to make something out of every catch. His tendency to run before securing the ball created those mistakes, he is always looking to explode for a TD. It's admirable and with that said he hasn't had any issues the last several weeks.

I am a huge Hakeem Nicks fan, I think he is built to be a wide receiver, runs great routes and has great hands. As a Giants fan I feel lucky to have such a talented player on my team. I feel even more privileged to have what I consider to be the best tandem with Victor Cruz. If I had to absolutely pick one right now I would start dancing salsa and go with #80. We Giants fans will probably not have to worry as Eli Manning should be throwing to both these wide receivers for years to come, they both deserve to get paid!

What a tough choice but after seeing some of those stats provided it would be hard to go against Cruz.

  • Jwill says:

Hakeem Nicks if healthy will always be the better wide receiver from the two. Cruz is nice to have, don’t get me wrong.

  • Cameron says:

    One word CRUZ!

  • Treena says:

I love both of them but I agree Victor Cruz is slightly better than Hakeem Nicks at this moment in time. We sure are lucky to have both and I hope the writer is correct in saying that signing them both is something we do not have to worry about.

Your post may have changed my thoughts on who I think is better. I am also a Hakeem Nicks fan and picked him in league as well. I was waiting for Victor Cruz to go through sophomore letdown thinking defenses would prepare for him. Seems they have and he is still good enough to beat them. The 2011 stats astounded me, I did not think Cruz was that much better with a similar game count. Based on that and recent performance you have to select Cruz.

I dislike the Giants but will admit that both your wide receivers are very good. I thought Manningham would be a starter and a significant player for us but as of now Harbaugh favors Moss and Craptree, I mean Crabtree. Mario Manningham could be our best wide receiver yet we don’t use him. If I could take one of your guys today, I would take Victor Cruz over Hakeem Nicks.

  • Chris B says:

Victor Cruz would have been my choice and after seeing the stats you put up it just reiterated my decision. Dont get me wrong Nicks is great and like you said we are lucky to have them both but if one needed to be chosen it would be cruz for me.

  • F.X. says:

You make a good argument for Cruz with the stats an all but Nicks is the more naturally gifted athlete. His size, hands and just overall athleticism is superior. I think speed they are both about the same. Hakeem Nicks just needs to stay healthy to produce cause he is the better wide receiver.
