Arizona Cardinals 24 NY Giants 17
Another disappointing loss for the New York Giants at the hands of the Arizona Cardinals in week 7, the final score 24-17.
Unlike last weeks loss versus the New Orleans Saints the G-Men had a chance to win this football game. It was frustrating to watch Big Blue on both defense and offense. They played a sloppy game and once again looked unprepared. New York falls to 5-2 in the NFC East and still holds on to first place but for how long? The tough part of our scheduled started last week and it does not let up any time soon.
I found myself questioning the play calling, similar to last week even though the defense played a bit better. The offense was horrible, Eli Manning reverted momentarily to the young version who would chuck passes up into double coverage. He still played well enough to position us to win the game but the rest of the team did not cooperate.
Marion Manningham seems to have an issue holding on to the ball, he dropped what clearly would have been a touchdown pass from Eli. That ball could not have been placed any better by the veteran quarterback but Mario has shown butterfingers all throughout the year. The normally reliable Ahmad Bradshaw coughed up the ball during a key drive in the fourth quarter. Instead of going down after a great gain he decided to fight for that extra yard and fumbled for the first time this year. He also committed a stupid penalty when he punched a Cardinal defender on the grill of his helmet.
Brandon Jacobs' inability to gain ground on short yardage plays came to bite us in the butt again. He was stopped at the goal line and we had to settle for a field goal instead of a touchdown. Kevin Gilbride's play calling was as bad as last weeks for Bill Sheridan.
The defense played better but it does not get a free pass this week. They started out with pressure on Warner and right away he threw an interception. The NY Giants were playing a better football game defensively but then they went away from pressure and kept rushing their front four who seem to be an overrated bunch this season. The pressure was put back on towards the end of the fourth quarter which brings why it wasn't used more often? The Arizona Cardinals were using short plays and screens and we seemed completely surprised by this. Arizona is a team without a pass play over 40 yards this season!
Our defense was so out of it that a ridiculous "Wild Cat" play produced a wide opened Larry Fitzgerald who surprisingly enough dropped the ball. It would have not mattered as the play would have been brought back due to a penalty by the Cards. That play is indicative of the lack of preparation our whole team seems to have at this point of the 2009 NFL season.
New York has always been known for being physical, that is what helped NY defeat the New England Patriots 2 years ago. Unfortunately they have lost that physical edge and are getting pushed around and manhandled by opposing teams on both sides of the field. Tom Coughlin is an intelligent coach that usually has his teams prepared and disciplined but he needs his coordinators to contribute with better play calling. Throwing long passes on 3rd and short is not the answer Kevin Gilbride! Adjusting the running game to get the short yardage is!!!
